Division III Notes and Thoughts on College Football Every Day

September 4th:

  • The biggest division (most teams) got started last night - and before bed I spent some time watching the first game to kick things off for D3, Merchant Marine at Montclair State. The Mariners, from Kings Point, NY, beat the home team Red Hawks, 41-24.

  • The Gettysburg defense shut out the Juniata offense for the first 54 minutes of the game to key a 24-7 road win - an important win for the Bullets because they lost to their former conference opponents at home last year to open the season.

  • One Top 25 team started their season last night, and it was the defending Division III national champions! Doesn’t look like UW-River Falls has missed a beat because they handled Southern Virginia quite easily, winning 73-7.

  • The I-90 Bowl wasn’t close as Brockport beat Buffalo State, 68-0. The Golden Eagles have claimed ownership of the I-90 Bowl Trophy for ten straight years, as they have outscored the Bengals 474-77 during that time. Additionally, the Golden Eagles defense has held Buffalo State without a touchdown in the matchup since October 30th, 2021.

  • The Riverside Rumble returned to Harper Davis Field on Thursday night, with Millsaps and Belhaven fighting for a sword and bragging rights on the same street. Belhaven owned the series 9-6 and had taken four of the last five meetings, but Millsaps, coming off its first winning season, left no doubt this time, defeating the Blazers 36-20.

  • Millsaps College and Belhaven University are separated by just a .5 mile in Jackson, Mississippi…
